United Summit Center is a comprehensive mental health center serving seven counties in
north central West Virginia. United Summit Center and United Hospital Center work together to offer a comprehensive mental health delivery system.

Substance Abuse Residential

John D. Good Recovery Center is a residential substance abuse treatment facility located in Terra Alta, West Virginia, comprised of a Detoxification Unit and a Recovery Community Program. The staff is dedicated to providing quality care to each individual battling with substance abuse and chemical dependency. Each program is designed to tailor to the specific needs of each individual at different stages in their recovery process. The Center is available to male and female West Virginia residents who are 18 years of age or older. This is a locked facility with 24-hour security.

Detoxification Unit

The Detoxification Unit is a residential 10-day detoxification program for individuals with a chemical dependency. There are 20 available beds – 10 voluntary and 10 court-ordered or involuntary. Medically monitored detoxification services are provided through a 24-hour available nursing staff and daily appointments with a physician. Treatment services are primarily supportive and group-based. Individuals will participate in group therapy, individual therapy, and a 12-step recovery program.

Referrals are accepted 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Those requiring medically-managed, or acute, care will be referred to neighboring programs equipped to provide appropriate care. All participants will be offered information and referred to follow-up treatment and support services in their home communities upon graduation from the program.

Recovery Community

The Recovery Community is an 18-bed, long-term residential program following a community-based peer-driven philosophy. Essentially, the residents of this 15-18 week program adopt a therapeutic community concept where they rely mostly on themselves and their peers during their recovery. This method teaches self-reliance and positive social skills by reducing dependency on staff. The Recovery Community promotes personal growth and upward mobility through a three-stage process with increasing privileges accompanied by increasing responsibility and expectations.

Residents will participate in a 12-week anger management course, a 9-week assertiveness course, encounter groups, group therapy, routine assessments, AA/SA meetings 5 nights a week, and guest speaker presentations. The purpose of the activities is to prepare the residents for re-entering the community more self-sufficient and with a more positive outlook on life and their future. Past residents of the Recovery Community have completed their GED, taken DUI classes, received their mining cards, and/or secured employment while enrolled in the program.
